Process and Casting
Village Arts believes acting and the creation of a show is a process of discovery and learning. Theatre requires that all the participants work as a team, and it is our hope our students find the value of teamwork, or ensemble, through the creative process. Everyone in the program is valued and in turn, students learn the value of their peers, of themselves, of their teachers as well as everyone involved in the production.
Our casting process reflects our goals of discovery and learning for each of our theatre programs. Older elementary school students (Grades 4 & 5) are usually cast in larger roles. Grade 3 and older first-time participants often get a smaller speaking role and are part of the ensemble. The younger students and less experienced students are the ensemble players. Ensemble players are on stage a lot! They sing and dance in just about every big “number” and help support the telling of the story.
A great deal of time, thought and love goes into our casting decisions. Sometimes it is painful and feels unfair, yet our decisions are based not just on talent, but on growth and the belief that each child will discover a great deal through the ensemble based process.
