 VILLAGE ARTS – BEHAVIOR POLICIES

Village Arts Mission Statement

MISSION

Village Arts is building an inclusive community through teaching performing and visual arts that supports personal development of children in an environment where families of Valley Village and the greater San Fernando Valley region can connect and create.

VISION

At Village Arts we envision a home for all children 5 to 105 – a place for everyone to experience and explore all art disciplines and where creative collaborations organically fosters meaningful connection, communication and understanding.

Bullying

Bullying is when one or more people exclude, tease, taunt, gossip, hit, kick, or put down another person with the intent to hurt another. Bullying happens when a person or group of people want to have power over another and use their power to get their way at the expense of someone else. Bullying can also happen through social media and through the use of emails, text messaging, instant messaging, social media and other less direct methods. This type of bullying can also lead to persons being hurt and is especially hurtful when persons are targeted with meanness and exclusion. Bullying is inexcusable. Each Village Arts participant is expected to treat other students and the staff with respect, and to help each other achieve the best possible experience. If a student has difficulty meeting this expectation, parents may be called upon to assist. We work together as a team to ensure that students gain self-confidence, make new friends, and have a great experience in our programs. Our leadership addresses all incidents of bullying seriously and insist the staff to promote communication with their students, so both staff and studnet will be comfortable alerting us to any problems. We cannot manage an incident if we do not know about it. Every person has the right to expect to have the best possible experience in Village Arts programs and classes, and by working together as a team to identify and manage bullying, we can help ensure that all students and staff find success.

Chronic Health Conditions

Any student with a chronic health condition must have that condition documented by a licensed physician on the health history form provided by the Village Arts. All medical information shall be kept confidential.

Civil Disobedience or Disruption

Any conduct, either individually or in a group, that is intentionally disruptive to or designed to be disruptive to the normal operation of the Village Arts programs may result in being removed from a class or a theatre program and possibly expelled. Such conduct includes but is not limited to the following: destruction of property, or advocating such disruption or destruction, refusing to cooperate with staff attempting to maintain or restore order in the class or rehearsal, and/or program activity, consistently starting fights or arguments and/or harming another student.

Dangerous Weapons

Items designed to cause bodily harm or deemed potentially harmful, are confiscated. The parents/guardians are contacted. Bringing such items into a classroom or a rehearsal may result in expulsion from a Village Arts program.

Deceitful Activity

Any student involved in lying or attempting to deceive a staff member will be subject to disciplinary action.

Diversity

We are a community made up of a diverse population. Our staff and student population are comprised of people from all types of race, faiths, gender and sexual identifications, socioeconomic background and family structures. Our mission is that we all come together as ONE community and have a fun, safe time together. It’s important for everyone to feel important and have a positive experience at Village Arts.

DEI STATEMENT

Village Arts and its Board of Directors are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We recognize the true value that diversity and equitable access provides for our families and our community and are committed to fully understanding diversity, equity, and inclusion.
We acknowledge that this is a continuous evolution as we strive to reflect and meet the needs of our growing community to help us live up to our motto, “A Place for Everyone.” To ensure that all voices have an opportunity to be heard, we will:

  • Strive to educate ourselves, our collaborative artists, and our families on the importance of contributing to social and educational equity.
  • Build an inclusive organization through teaching and performing that supports the personal development of children and youth of all ages; open opportunities for children and youth from all walks of life to pursue their interests in the arts and theater;
  • Commit to being allies with underrepresented and marginalized children and youth of all ages; provide affordable and accessible programming for all children and youth regardless of income, gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, sexual orientation, familial status, or differently-abled status, gender identity, religion, education, or any other barriers they may face.
  • Provide an arts center where children and youth of all ages can find their voice and express themselves regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, sexual orientation, familial status or differently-abled status, gender identity, religion, education, or any other barriers that they may face.
  • Create a safe and inclusive art center where all staff, artists, patrons, collaborators, and volunteers feel valued and respected regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, sexual orientation, familial status, or differently-abled status, gender identity, religion, or education.

Drinking and Drugs

Zero Tolerance Policy = students automatic expulsion from a class or a Village Arts program. No alcohol, drugs or controlled substances are to be carried onto the Village Arts property or a property they may be renting; this includes cigarettes or any other tobacco product. Any student in possession of alcohol, drugs, or a controlled substance is immediately expelled. In the event alcohol, drugs or a controlled substance is found, it is confiscated, and the parent/guardian is contacted by the Village Arts staff to pick up their child immediately, no matter the time of day or circumstances.

Falsely Reported Emergency Calls and Fire Alarms

Any student setting off a fire alarm, fire extinguisher, tampering with smoke detector or using any device to falsely report an emergency to 911 will be subject to disciplinary action.

Fighting

Village Arts does not tolerate students who harm other students; whether it is physical or verbal fighting, including degrading, demeaning, threatening other students or staff, or making fun of others. Any student involved in fighting is subject to discipline and may be sent home. The parent/guardian is contacted by the Village Arts directors.

Internet and Social Media Policy

In general, Village Arts views social networking sites as personal items and respects the right of students to use social media as a medium of self- expression. If a student chooses to identify as a student at our program on social media sites, some readers may view the student as a representative or spokesperson of the Village Arts. In light of this possibility, Village Arts requires, as a condition of participation in Village Arts programs, that students observe the following guidelines when referring to Village Arts, its programs or activities, its students, and/or staff, on social media.

  1. Students must be respectful in all communications related to or referencing Village Arts, its staff, and other students.
  2. Students must not use obscenities, profanity, or vulgar language.
  3. Students must not use social media to harass, bully, or intimidate other students or staff. Behaviors that constitute harassment and bullying include, but are not limited to, comments that are derogatory with respect to race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, color, or disability; sexually suggestive, humiliating, or demeaning comments; and threats to stalk, haze, or physically injure another person.

  4. Students must not use social media to discuss conduct that is prohibited by Village Arts policies, including, but not limited to, the use of alcohol and drugs, sexual behavior, sexual harassment, and bullying.

Any student found to be in violation of any portion of this Social Networking and Media Policy will be subject to immediate disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal from a Village Arts program.

Obscenity

Obscene, profane or vulgar language; written, oral, or expressed by symbols is not tolerated. Being respectful to staff and other students is important and expected. Any student who violates this policy will be subject to disciplinary action.
Smart/Cellular Phones

Smart/Cell phones are not permitted to be used during Village Arts programs unless permission has been provided by a staff person.  Students can use their smart phone in case of emergency and if they need to contact their parents/guardians. If a student does not adhere to this policy, devices will be confiscated and return at the end of the class and/or program’s session.

Students may not at any time use their smart/cell phones to photograph another student or staff person unless permission has been given by a Village Arts staff person.

Pornography

The viewing or possession of pornography or other adult-oriented material, in all forms, is not permitted.

Stealing

Stealing is a violation of law. A student who becomes involved in a theft of property, another student’s belongings, or a staff person’s belongings is subject to disciplinary action. Stealing will result in a expulsion from a Village Arts program.

Behavior Management Policy

We believe that every child has the right to experience our programs and all they offer. We believe in setting limits and explaining the boundaries for all participants. When these boundaries are tested, we use specific procedures to help the student to continue their experience at camp. On the first day of our program our staff will go over the expectations and ground rules of the program. Students have the opportunity to ask questions about policies and rules, so that everyone is clear about expectations.

Procedures We Follow:

  1. The Staff will speak with the student and check whether the student understands why the behavior is unacceptable and knows what the consequences are. The Staff will restate the desired behavior, with clear consequences given for not following the desired behavior. The removal of a student from a problem situation in a time out may be a consequence in this first stage. Removal gives the student time to calm down, reflect on his/her actions and the staff a chance to discuss with the student what happened.
  2. If the behavior is repeated, the staff will let the student know that this is still unacceptable and will then involve the Village Arts Director. At this stage, Village Arts will contact the parent or guardian of the student to make them aware of the situation and to ask for cooperation and insight.
  3. If the behavior persists, the Village Arts will determine if the student should remain in the theatre program or ask to leave. There are no refunds for students expelled for behavioral reasons.
  4. There are some actions that may warrant immediate removal from a program. These actions include but are not limited to; smoking or using tobacco products, using alcohol or illegal drugs, stealing, or endangering their own safety or the safety of staff or students.

This discipline policy attempts to let students know that while they are cared for, certain behaviors are not acceptable in our programs. This policy also involves the parents before the problems escalate and Village Arts invites them to be a part of the solution.

This form is to be signed as part of the process of registering for a Village Arts class and/or program. Your signature will affirm that you have read the Village Arts Policies and fully understand all of the Village Arts policies stated therein.

I have read and discussed Village Arts behavior policy with my child. We all agree to adhere to the policies and understand that the refund policy states: no refunds for students being expelled for disciplinary action.

I DO HEREBY AFFIRM THAT I have read the aforementioned policies.

Process and Casting

Village Arts believes acting and of the creation of a show is a process of discovery and learning. Theatre requires that all the participants work as a team, and it is our hope our students find the value of teamwork, or ensemble, through the creative process. Everyone in the program is valued and in turn, students learn the value of their peers, of themselves, of their teachers as well as everyone involved in the production.

Our casting process reflects our goals of discovery and learning for each of our theatre programs. Older elementary school students (Grades 4 & 5) are usually cast in larger roles. Grade 3 and older first-time participants often get a smaller speaking role and are part of the ensemble. The younger students and less experienced students are the ensemble players. Ensemble players are on stage a lot! They sing and dance in just about every big “number” and help support the telling of the story.

A great deal of time, thought and love goes into our casting decisions. Sometimes it is painful and feels unfair, yet our decisions are based not just on talent, but on growth and the belief that each child will discover a great deal through the ensemble based process.
